Shalom, and welcome to the Carmel Academy Upper School.
The Upper School years are a time when each student’s world is filled with discovery and fast-paced changes. Carmel Academy provides a safe, nurturing environment where each student is valued as an individual and is given the opportunity to navigate the adolescent years and develop his or her unique place in our school community, the larger Jewish community, and, ultimately, the global community.
Our dual curriculum blends a rigorous, experiential Judaic studies program with a comprehensive general studies program, paving the road for the demands of higher education to follow. Our students actively participate in challenging classes that strive to meet each student’s academic abilities and needs. Carmel’s highly trained professional educators are enthusiastic about helping our students succeed along their educational journey. They do so by strengthening the quality of the academic experience for each student.
Our classes, elective courses and enrichment programs provide each student the opportunities to explore his or her interests and excel academically at an individualized pace. Students can choose from afterschool team sports such as cross-country running, tennis, baseball, soccer and basketball, or develop their interest in art, photography, year book, engineering and more.
Our active Student Council, elected yearly with 6th-8th grade class representatives, provides students with the experience and opportunity to impact their school environment. Council leaders meet regularly with school administration to advocate change and promote student interests.
Our campus is where Upper School learning begins but does not stop at our building doors. Our sixth graders begin their experience with a trip to TEVA, an outdoor cooperative bonding program focused on tikun olam – healing the planet. Each spring our seventh graders travel to Washington, DC, where they explore the roots of our American heritage.
And finally, after Passover, our eighth grade class leaves for a two-week Israel experience. Years of learning about Israel, Jewish history, biblical and rabbinic texts, Hebrew language, and T’fillah (prayer) come alive as the students walk in the footsteps of their ancestors and historical figures.
Chesed is an integral value that we live each day at Carmel Academy. Our students stock food pantries, feed meals at soup kitchens, sing and bring holiday cheer to the elderly in Greenwich. Our students learn first-hand the power each one has to care for others and positively affect the greater good of humanity.
